On March 14th local time, newly elected leader of Canada's ruling Liberal Party, Mark Carney, was sworn in as the 24th Prime Minister of Canada. According to foreign media such as Agence France Presse and The Daily Telegraph, on the day of his inauguration, Carney retaliated against US President Donald Trump's threat of "annexation" and promised that Canada would never become a part of the United States.
Canada will never, never become a part of the United States in any way, form or form, "said Carney after being sworn in. He also expressed the hope that this administration can find ways to "cooperate" with the Trump administration. The Daily Telegraph reported that Carney also stated that his plans to meet with Trump have not been confirmed yet, but he looks forward to talking to Trump "at the appropriate time".
Trump has repeatedly stated publicly that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States and has stated that it will be achieved through "economic power". He once referred to Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau as the 'Governor of Canada'. US media previously reported that Trump had told Trudeau that if Canada could not afford the tariffs planned by the US, it should be incorporated into the US. Trump's above remarks have been widely opposed by the Canadian side.
Recently, on March 11th, Trump tweeted that "as long as Canada becomes our cherished 51st state, all tariffs and other issues will completely disappear. In addition, Trump announced that due to Ontario's 25% surcharge on all electricity exports to the three states of the United States, he has instructed U.S. Commerce Secretary Lutnick to "impose an additional 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum products from Canada, bringing the total U.S. tariff level on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%. However, later that day, as Ontario, Canada announced the abandonment of the 25% surcharge on electricity exports to three states in the United States, the United States also announced the withdrawal of the additional 25% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum products.
Faced with a series of tariff threats and "annexation" remarks from the United States, the new Canadian Prime Minister Carney has clearly demonstrated a firm attitude towards safeguarding national sovereignty and independence. The international community is waiting to see how Canada and the United States will compete and cooperate in areas such as economy and trade in the future.
