The US Department of Education may face a countdown to its c

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal on the 5th, informed sources have revealed that it is expected that US President Trump will sign an executive order to abolish the US Department of Education as early as March 6th local time. In a draft executive order seen by The Wall Street Journal, US Secretary of Education Linda McMahon is instructed to "take all necessary measures to assist in the closure of the Department of Education to the maximum extent permitted by law. The draft has been marked as' pre-determined ', indicating that its attributes may change, and the White House has not yet responded to this.
Since Trump began his second presidential term, preparations have been underway to repeal the executive order from the Department of Education. In early February, The Wall Street Journal reported that US government officials were considering this measure. On March 3rd, after being approved by the Senate to become the Secretary of Education, McMahon mentioned relevant measures in an email sent to employees of the Department of Education, stating that he would "send education back to the states" and that Trump and American voters "entrusted us with the important task of quickly and responsibly eliminating bureaucracy in the Department of Education".
The "2025 Project" of the conservative think tank, the Heritage Foundation, has developed a detailed plan to shut down the US Department of Education, including transferring the Civil Rights Office of the Department of Education to the Department of Justice and transferring the student loan department to the Department of Treasury. In fact, the Trump administration has taken a series of measures to weaken the US Department of Education, such as firing probationary employees, providing buyout programs to employees, suspending some civil rights enforcement work, and canceling many grants and contracts related to research and teacher quality.
However, abolishing the Department of Education cannot be accomplished by Trump signing a decree. The draft executive order mentions that the President has no authority to shut down the Ministry of Education. The US Department of Education is a cabinet level federal department established with congressional approval. Abolishing the department requires congressional approval and 60 votes in favor in the Senate, while the Republican Party currently holds only 53 seats.
The US Department of Education manages many important projects, such as funding disabled students and providing funding for student loans, and has a large political support base. Polls show that most Americans are skeptical of abolishing the Ministry of Education, and Democrats are also opposed to this idea. Once the measures to abolish the Department of Education are implemented, it is expected to trigger intense political and legal struggles, which will have a profound impact on the US education system.
