At 9:43 am on March 25th, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake occurred in the offshore waters off the west coast of New Zealand's South Island (46.72 ° S, 165.97 ° E), with a depth of 10 kilometers. According to the latest monitoring and analysis results, the Tsunami Warning Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources has triggered a local tsunami near the epicenter, but it will not affect the coast of China. The center will continue to track and analyze earthquake and tsunami monitoring data.
According to the automatic measurement of the China Earthquake Networks Center, the epicenter of the earthquake was 46.52 degrees south latitude and 166.27 degrees east longitude, with magnitude 6.8 and focal depth of 42 kilometers. The United States Geological Survey's earthquake information website initially recorded a magnitude of 7, but later determined that at 14:43 local time (9:43 Beijing time), a 6.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in the waters near the southern end of the South Island of New Zealand. The epicenter was located about 160 kilometers northwest of the Snells Islands, with a depth of 10 kilometers.
The New Zealand Civil Defense Department has issued a warning that there will continue to be abnormal ocean currents and unpredictable waves along the west coast of New Zealand's South Island from Milford Bay to Cape Puisiegel, and the risk is expected to ease around 8:00 pm that day. The local government reminds the public to stay away from beaches, ports, docks, river mouths, and other water facing areas, and to remain highly vigilant until the warning is lifted. It is reported that multiple towns including Kingston and Dunedin have felt the earthquake, and there are currently no reports of casualties or property damage.
